Mizzy says: What's Whales?

I promised earlier I would make a post to talk about what this blog is about, and the purpose it serves.

Find a bunch of text under the break!

The idea for Whales Can't Read goes back to when doctorMcbob, Moonlit and I were in High School.
A bunch of our friends took a Facebook quiz to find out what Poke'mon we were. Every single one of us had gotten Charizard, the mighty flying fire lizard of nightmares and merchandise.

Naturally, we did what any rational group of weirdos would do, and made it into a little club.
All we really did was talk about video games and comics.

Until one time, we were walking down through downtown Seattle and we were drinking our Ramune and Arizona tea thinking how cool it would be if all the "Charizards" went and got a shared apartment, and used it to make cartoons and comics.

We generated a few comic ideas, we laughed, time passed, we graduated, lost contact, and time went on.

The concept though stuck with me.
How cool would it be to have a community of artists to run a website ful of our comics and animation and art and opinions in general?
Pretty freaking cool.

Needless to say, however, We'd have to change the name to somthing not protected by copyright by a big ol' video game company.

So Mcbob, Moonlit and I, the surviving Charizards, got to brainstorming.
And months later after thinking of some of the stupidest names imaginable, we decided to call it Whales Can't Read, until we thought of somthing better.

Around this time, thanks to the My Little Pony fandom, I came to meet Lion Kimbro, whose capacity for abstract thought and appreciation for creativity and the power of an active mind intruiged me.
So I talked with him about how to define Whales Can't Read, and he gave us advice to get started.

We rounded up a few artistcally oriented freinds, and a few creative others who liked our idea, and we started meeting every friday to make silly comics and think about what our final website will look like and what it will be. Lion describes it as follows:

Whales Can't Read is an open website and forum where users post comics, writing, animation, or whatever arts they please in a way reminiscent of a scheduled newspaper column or cartoon, to help artists find themselves and help them get noticed. Kind of like DeviantArt, but more formal on organized, and with a higher quality standard.

Or at least that's the best way I can put it.

That's just about as straightforward as it comes.

Needless to say, we won't be using blogspot forever.
This page, the Whaleblog if you will, exists to help us get into the flow of updating on a schedule.
It also allows for us to keep eachother updated about our creative endeavors during the time that we're all in seperate places.

I can't say I expect a lot of readers at this point, but if you are there reading this, Thanks for your attention, and I hope you enjoy watching as we grow into a big fancy website full of users and bells and whistles.

Oh!
And before I forget, we're always looking for artists or like minded creative people to join us. If you're interested in joining our little community, and eventually our actual site, send a few samples of your work to Mizzy@whalescantread.com.
Or if you're super traditional and only use snail mail, send copies to
 whales cant read
4327 Indian Pipe Loop NW, Building H-208
Box 60688
Olympia, WA 98505-0003.

I realize it's a long shot that anyone will want to join us at this point, but right now a lot of us are new to what we're doing, and our quality standards are super low. Better to join now then in ten years, when we're all super snooty and professional, and only accept super fancy work.
After all, what is there to lose? We don't bite.

That's all there is to it for now.
It's saturday, so I owe you all a drawing.
Here it is.

Mizzy signing off until later.
Have a good one!
